Common Uses:
- This medication is used to treat diabetes, insipidus, for surgical procedures, head injury or
other conditions requiring fluid control.
How To Take This Medication:
- Take this by mouth as directed. Your dose and the frequency with which you take this will be
based on your condition and response. Do not increase the dose, take more often or stop taking this
medication with out consulting your doctor or pharmacist.
Possible Side Effects:
- Headache, nausea, mild stomach cramps and flushing may occur. If any of these effects persist or
worsen, inform your doctor. Notify your doctor if you experience: headache, seizures. In the unlikely
event you have an allergic reaction to this drug, seek immediate medical attention. Symptoms include:
rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, trouble breathing. If you notice other side effects not listed
above contact your doctor or pharmacist.
Precautions:
- Tell your doctor your medical history, especially of: blood clotting disorders (hemophilia or
Von Willebrand’s disease), high blood pressure, heart disease, fluid or vitamin/mineral (electrolyte)
imbalances, allergies. This medication must be used with caution in children since they may be more
sensitive to its effects. This medication must be used with caution in the elderly since they may be
more sensitive to its effects. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant before using this drug. It is not
known if desmopressin is excreted into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
Drug Interactions:
- Tell your doctor of all prescription and over-the-counter drugs your may be using, especially
of: carbamazepine, chlorpropamide, demeclocycline, water pills (diuretics), drugs that increase the
blood pressure (e.g., dopamine, epinephrine, ephedrine, levophed), alcohol. Ask your doctor how much,
if any, alcohol you may drink. Alcohol interferes with the action of desmopressin by increasing
urination. Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.
Notes, Storage, And Missed Doses:
- Laboratory tests may be done to monitor your progress. In addition, the amount of fluid you
drink may be monitored. Do not share this medication with others.
Store at room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees F, away from heat and moisture as directed.
Keep this and all medications out of reach of children.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is near time to take your next dosage,
skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up.
